Evolution of the air conditioner design for campers and other vehicles

In 2018, after having completed a thermoelectric generation project (promoted both by European Community and NASA) we were invited to present our generator to a company specialized in truck air conditioners. The main goal was to understand if it could power the actual conditioners when the truck is parked, one of the biggest issues of this business. Unfortunately, the energy needed was too much and the problem was not solved.

The energy challenge of the air conditioner

That’s why we thought; “Why don’t we eliminate the problem AT ALL?” Then we decided to create an air conditioning system with extremely low energy consumption, low environment impact and that can be used in complete autonomy while parked.

We studied several technologies to dramatically reduce – or eliminate – electrical consumption, avoiding the noisy/odorous electric generators or electric plugins that often do not provide enough energy, forcing to use low-power conditioners.

NH3-H2O absorption technology

We found the solution in the NH3-H2O absorption technology (read properties of ammonia*), already known and widely adopted by large-scale industrial refrigeration industry.

Until now this technology has not been adopted for moving vehicles due to some limitations: dimensions, weights, time needed for reaching full capacity and the need to keep refrigerant solutions separated while the vehicle is moving.

Study, innovation and development of innovative programs for camper air conditioner

After a depth study and testing phase we understood that any previous solution did not solve the problem: we need something completely new. That’s why we developed some specific simulation programs, able to manage new innovative components and all the desired characteristics.   

Compared to traditional compression system we succeeded to obtain the state change of the cooling solution using only heat, without moving parts. And the necessary heat can be generated – using a small burner – or recovered directly from the vehicle.


Our first system delivers 3kW for cooling and 6kW for heating, completely scalable and is designed in blocks, separating the fluid supply circuit from the refrigeration section, thus allowing the possibility to create different devices for completely different market sectors. The small burner can be supplied by any kind of energy present on board (fossil, synthetic, gas or even hydrogen), eventually taken from the vehicle tank.

Energy efficiency and ecological advantages of our air conditioner for campers and other vehicles

System electricity absorption is only 5% compared with traditional systems; in addition, using the trigeneration thermoelectric solution a zero electrical consumption is guaranteed.

Having separated fluid supply circuit from the refrigerator section is possible to recover the heat produced by thermal engines and to eliminate the usage of batteries in electric engines when parked, leaving the vehicle’s mileage unchanged.

On boats it will be possible to climate reducing by 90% the power of onboard electric generators, actually dedicated mainly to this task.

A further advantage using heat to obtain cold or heat air is the possibility of conditioning remote environments not served by electrical lines; in this case it will also be possible to use renewable sources – such as high temperature solar thermal – further reducing management costs and introducing solutions environment friendly.

The prototype air conditioner for campers

The demo prototype measures 650x450x350 mm, weighing less than 30kg; the dimensions of the final version may be further reduced by approximately 20%.


After the patent granted in June 2020, we submitted the ambitious project to tenders that could help the development. At the end of 2021, after a careful evaluation the project was promoted and financed by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE).

The work continues with great determination and satisfaction for the results obtained so far, shown in the following graph.

*Ammonia, a Liquid Coolant

Ammonia is an alkaline colorless chemical compound, naturally present in nature and obtained as a by-product in several human created reactive processes.

Thermodynamic qualities of ammonia:

  • Is a natural fluid
  • Is easily available and inexpensive
  • Has a good energy efficiency; high latent heat and therefore less refrigerant charge
  • Can absorb renewable energy from the air even at very low temperatures, avoiding electrical aids or back-ups
  • Exempted from the F-GAS regulation
  • Null ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential)
  • Null GWP (Global Warming Potential); this indicator expresses the amount of carbon dioxide corresponding to one kg of refrigerant emitted into the atmosphere; the direct greenhouse effect

Development Of Other Projects For Improving Mobile Air Conditioning

Studies of the current technologies for vehicles air conditioning has highlighted the low efficiency of the actual systems in transmitting heat/cold in the living cell.

The focus is on new transmission systems, different from the current ones based on convection; the new idea is radiant systems, already used in civil building where maximum energy efficiency and comfort are required.

Radiant systems do not heat the air to heat people and objects; they heat people and objects which in turn heat the air. In this way heat can arrive even from above, as it happens on earth with the sun.

Radiant transmission has another advantage, a very low thermal inertia; using lower liquid temperatures than traditional convection systems is very efficient both for heating and for cooling.

A characteristic of new projects, where living cells ceiling, walls and floors will become active elements in creating comfort, is that there will be only one system for both heating and cooling.

The goal is the design of systems compatible with the current production methods of ceiling and walls of the living cell, reducing weights, costs and internal dimensions.
